About the NIrV Bible Translation

The New International Reader's Version® (NIrV) of the Bible is a version of the New International Version® (NIV) written for a third grade reading level. More people read the NIV than any other English Bible. Like the NIV on which it's based, the NIrV combines great accuracy to the Bible's original languages with English that is easy to read and understand.

The NIrV uses the words of the NIV whenever it can. Sometimes it uses shorter words. It explains words that might be hard to understand. The NIrV also makes sentences shorter. And it avoids using words that could have more than one meaning. All of this makes it a great Bible for children, for those learning English as a second language, or anyone who wants an easier to understand version of the Bible.

God has always spoken so people would know what he meant. When God first gave the Bible to his people, he used their languages. They could understand what they read and heard. God wants us to understand the Bible today, too. So we have worked hard to make the New International Reader's Version easy to read and understand.

Is the NIrV an Accurate Bible?

At the time the Bible was written, God's people used the Hebrew and Greek languages. So the first writers of the Bible used those languages. We wanted the NIrV to say just what the first writers of the Bible said. So we kept checking what the Hebrew and Greek said.

The NIrV uses the best and oldest copies of the Hebrew and Greek Bible manuscripts. Some of the first English Bibles could not use those copies because they had not yet been found. But today we can check copies that are closer in time to the ones the first Bible writers wrote. We wanted to make sure we were giving you the actual Word of God.

As with the NIV, the NIrV Bible text is reviewed and updated to keep it current with today's English. Accuracy in Bible translation means paying attention to both the original languages and to our language today. This keeps the Word of God fresh for people reading the Bible today.

Shining a Light at C4 Convention

This past weekend, as with every year, my husband and I tabled at the Central Canada Comic Convention as artists. And I felt so blessed to be able to share God's Love for others through His Word. Being able to bring some LifeLight Bibles to the C4 Convention this past weekend was awesome! This was my first time doing this at the convention as I'm fairly new to this ministry, but I'm glad I brought Bibles along.

I gave away 9 Bibles and it felt so good! People were a lot more receptive than I thought they would be, and among those who came by our table, some comments were, "These people are smart! They're giving away Bibles!" and "I have that one!" Another Christian lady was encouraged that we were giving God's Word out because she said it was discouraging seeing so many dark and occult things on tables, she was thankful for us shining a light at the convention. And it increased my faith when I saw people picking them up. There were quite a few people who were happy to see them there, and I know that God will use them to help others come to know him better! Praise the Lord!

Dare to Prepare

I was honoured to speak and take part in Riverwood Church's youth retreat recently, and was so encourage to see the young people respond to God. What a great group, with great pastors and leaders, not to mention fantastic young people! 

Our theme for the weekend was to "Dare to Prepare,"  a topic focused on getting serious about our relationship with God. Twelve young people gave their life to Jesus this weekend and 55 recommitted and made a decision to get back on track with God. Fifteen Bibles where given out for young people who want an easy to read LifeLight scripture with helpful tips and reading plans. So amazing to see young people lining up to get a Bible. One young man was going through some serious struggles in life, and was broken by God, letting Jesus back in to his life and realizing that God has a plan and purpose for his life. 

We at LifeLight are so blessed to be a part of God's plan. Leaders prayed with their youth and it was a beautiful picture of the restoration process that only God can perform. Keep this group in your prayers as God continues His loving work!

The Power of the Word

This weekend I had the honour and privilege to speak to the patrons at Siliom Mission. 

As I shared about how the word of God can change our lives and change our hearts form being as hard as a rock to fertile soil, using the parable of sower and the seeds from Matthew 13, a women in front of me was obviously moved and wanted to talk immediately after. As I listened to her story my heart broke as I heard her need for God. We prayed together and she now has God in her life. I know that it will change everything. I left her with a complete Bible which she immediately started to read. Her favourite passage was one filled with hope that God is with us, that He will never forsake us, and that Jesus will be by our side no matter where we go. We all need to be reminded of that.

I cannot go into  the specific details of her needs, but would ask that you pray for her. With God working with her, nothing is impossible.

Please read the passage below. God wants all our hearts to fertile ground for his seed to grow and change our lives.

"Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seeds. 4 As he scattered them across his field, some seeds fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate them. 5 Other seeds fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seeds sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow. 6 But the plants soon wilted under the hot sun, and since they didn't have deep roots, they died. 7 Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants. 8 Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted! 9 Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand."

I pray that we all have "ears to hear"

Family & Friends Support Fundraiser

Soup Bus Downtown

Our Care Group prepared big pots of beef barley soup and coffee and took the church bus downtown.  We parked in front of the Booth Centre and offered free soup and coffee to people coming by.  Those who promised to read the "Free Bible" got a LifeLight New Testament.  Some 40 people took the New Testament. Some 100 delicious soup meals were served.  Quite a few people said this was the best beef barley soup they had ever had. All were very appreciative.

Isaiah 11:6 We celebrated a very special Thanksgiving Day by inviting some of our neighbours over for afternoon dessert. We enjoyed homemade apple crisp and ice-cream and then headed to the park to enjoy the beautiful Fall day. We played games together and harvested some produce from our community garden. Our fun was so contagious, that we returned home with more kids than we took to the park. The children commented how happy and excited they felt, and how much they enjoyed our time together. As the weather has gotten colder and the days shorter, we have fallen into the rhythm of a new season. We joyfully received our shipment of teen Bibles from LifeLight, a ministry dedicated to sharing God's Word through innovative Bibles. The arrival of the Bibles and the precious visit we shared with the ministry's reps so inspired our kids that they asked if they could start a kids' Bible study of their own. When we asked them when they wanted to start they responded, "Today!" It made me think how we truly need to have the faith of a child to enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:3-4. Our kids collected all the kids' Bibles they have accumulated over the years and brought them out to the living room. They even put LifeLight wristbands on each Bible as a gift for their friends. At 4pm on the same day we received our Bible shipment, the children knocked on a few doors and boldly invited their friends to come over to study the Bible with them. Two children came with the permission of their parents, including a little girl who prayed for salvation in our backyard over Easter. In our living room the children sat and took turns reading Matthew 2. A long awaited moment had arrived in our house, we were now beginning to make disciples! The children ate popcorn as they shared with one another what they liked best about what they read. Later they watched a short animated DVD on the life and ministry of Jesus and then they all played video games! We could never have planned a more natural afternoon, it was all the working of the Holy Spirit. Only a few short weeks ago, the children who regularly come to our house to play said they wished they could start some kind of club. Our son Caleb asked his friend how he liked the Bible study and his friend responded positively. Caleb then invited his friend to come over next Wednesday at 4pm to continue studying the Bible. Ten teens have signed up for the weekly Bible study that Robb will be leading on Wednesday evenings. We are grateful for each of these lives and pray that God's Word will transform them all, and many more.  We are thankful that the very first Bible study lead by a member of our MoveIn team was started and lead by our 10 and 8 year olds. A little child will lead them indeed! Please continue to pray for the work that God is doing in and through our family and team here in Oshawa. Please also continue to pray for our work on the staff team of MoveIn, as we mobilize teams of regular Christians to move in among the unreached, urban poor and make reproducing disciples. Successful Advocate Info Session

Last Saturday, Canadian LifeLight Ministries hosted an advocate info session!

It was great to have about 10 people come out and hear about how they can get more involved with spreading God's Word all across this Nation! Amazing stories where shared and lots of great ideas were discussed. Thank you to everyone that came out. We are excited to have you on board as advocates and look forward to working together with you to do many great things.

Youth Respond to Giving away Bibles

I had the privilege of speaking at Calvary Temples youth retreat this fall. What a great group  of young people and youth leaders!

Jared, the leader of their youth group wanted to challenge the young people to look past their own comfort zone and church  and focus on bringing new people into the group.

In the weekend sessions we talked about how We need to follow Jesus, that he has called us despite our imperfection and that he not only loves us, but likes us. When asked If they wanted to get to know God better, 95% put up their hands, and then when challenged to give a Bible to someone they knew needed it, 10  Bibles where handed out with the promise that they would go to someone who needed the hope that is found inside! 

I know that God is going to do great things threw these young people at CT who are determined to make a difference for Jesus!

Muslim book store

We had a delicious dinner at a west African restaurant. Next door was a Muslim book store.

I had 3 Find God NTs with me. I gave one to the lady at the laundromat and I meant to leave one with the imam at the bookstore. When I went in and offered it to him he was glad to get it. His friend also wanted one. They started telling me about how Jesus had not died and how he was coming back to rule the world in righteousness.
I kept telling him to read all about it in the book I had given him. He wanted to know who had written the book and I assured him that it was written by God. They both assured me that they would read the book I had given them, and then they gave me an English copy of the Koran.

Pray that God will speak to them through this.

Befriending Mexican Farm Workers

I saw this in an old newsletter - clearly there is a need for Scriptures in Spanish not just in Ontario.
I'm thinking that Peter and Jake are Kroeker brothers from Rosenort, Manitoba

Two brothers, Jake and Peter, shared some of their experiences in distributing Spanish Scriptures:

 

P. Jake, I hear that you are planning to go to Itsky River Farms again this summer. What is that all about?

 

J. Every summer Itsky Farms hires more than a hundred Mexicans to take care of the vegetables on the farm. The men come without their families, so they are eager to connect with us. For four summers we have befriended them by providing music and refreshments and sharing God’s Word with them. Every year we have a welcome party and give them easy-reading Spanish New Testaments.

 

P. What kind of music do you offer them? I understand Spanish-speaking people have a much more flamboyant taste in music than we do. Can you provide them with music they appreciate?

 

J. We are very fortunate to have a group from a Spanish church in Brandon come to lead the workers in worship. You know some of the people in that group, right?

 

P. Yes, Anne and I taught English to some new employees at Maple Leaf Pork. Most of them were from El Salvador and were hoping to become Canadian citizens and bring their families after working here for a year.

 

J. Were you able to share your faith with them?

 

P. We tried to respect their rights not to have a new religion imposed on them, but it did not take long for a few of them and us to recognize each other as Christians. We got some NIrV Bibles from LifeLight and read portions of Scripture with them as an English exercise. This small group of El Salvadoran Christians later joined a group of Mexican Christians, who also worked at Maple Leaf, for regular services. That is the group that now serves the Itsky Farm workers with music, testimonies, worship and invitations to accept Christ. Jake, how do the workers respond when you offer the Spanish NTs?

 

J. They all seem happy to receive them. We hand them out at the beginning of the summer so we can have Bible studies with them.

 

P. It seems that throughout the world there are many people who are eager to get Bibles. In our school in Mexico the kids almost fought to hand out the Bibles for our daily Bible studies. In another school, a Grade 5 boy had just received a New Testament. At recess he sat at his desk reading the Bible stories. At the end of recess, he remarked, “The Bible must be one of the most interesting books to read.”

 

J. We will never know all the results and changes that the Bibles from LifeLight will produce in the lives in the recipients. It would be exciting to observe the effects God’s Word in their lives.

Bridging the Gap

Part of our team at LifeLight attended the Mark Schultz concert, where World Vision  had invited us to join them with a table of  Bibles ,as they continue to speak for the children of the world who go without food and water and try to bring aid to those who are less fortunate then we in Canada. Our role at LifeLight was to provide Bibles if there where any people in the crowd who wanted to give one to a friend or needed one for themselves.

We gave away over 20 Bibles last night, but one story reminds me of the power in God's word.

A man came in off the street just as the show was starting, not part of the concert crowd and asked for a Bible. He looked tired and worn out. Calvery from the Calvery Temple Church (cool to work for a church with your own name)brought him to our table and the man explained that he had lost his way in life, but remembered that when he used to read his Bible, it guided  him, helped him stay on track with God and his family. We gave him a copy of our LifeLight Bible and we prayed with him, and with tears in his eyes he thanked us over and over again for the Bible and our prayers. The man told us that he was now ready to stay on the right path with God, and that his new Bible would be the light that guided him.

What a powerful reminder of what Gods word can do for you and me. 

Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. (Psalms 119:105 NLT)

Buy a Toy/Get a Bible!

You can go give a Bible away at any event if you allow God to help you, even at a toy sale.

Liam Winter was cleaning his room and decided that he would sell some toys to buy a game that he had not yet saved up enough money to purchase. He also wanted to give away Bibles to help LifeLight spread the good news. His solution... With every purchase of a toy, the customer would receive an adult or children's Bible for free!!! And he gave away 5 kids and 2 adult Bibles... which he donated some of his profits to. One of his friends named Sarah donated money to cover the rest!

What a great day and a great example of how to get God involved in all we do. Way to go Liam!!

The Truth

I am Worthless.......

I have failed......

There is no hope for me.......

Nobody loves me......

I'm in this alone......

God does not love me anymore....

These are just a few examples of the Lies that we as people often allow to linger in our minds. We let circumstances, actions and thoughts that we are not proud of trick us into believing these lies. It doesn't take long before we give way for these lies to determine how we live and how we treat others.

But the reality is that, the Word of God contains the absolute truth about us. The words from God recorded in this Book are the absolute truth. God shows us what he thinks of us and how he sees us, in the Bible. All the negative thoughts mentioned above are not anywhere in the Bible and are therefore nothing more but lies!

It says in God's word: 

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[b] neither the present nor the future,nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8 : 38 - 39

God loves you unconditionally! He loves you no matter what your past has been. He loves you not matter what situation you are going through. Nothing, not your guilt, not your shame, not your loss, not your hurt, not your pain, not your doubt, can ever separate you from the love of God.

So what are you allowing to determine how you live? The lies of this world? Or the truth from the Word of God? How about others around you? Can you make a difference in their lives by providing them with a Bible so that they may also read and learn about the truth of who they are through God's love?
